Pedal Toys down through the ages

Friday, 6 January 2017 09:41:45 Europe/London

Pedal Toys down through the year - Tinneys ToysThe first toy pedal car made an appearance in the 1800’s, shortly after the full size motor car itself.  Wealthy children playing on the first pedal toy cars, were treated to fine works of engineering with bespoke and customised cars.  Right up to the 1920’s, the pedal automobile was designed as a mini version of the grown up car and was exclusively for the rich. Just as the first automobiles were reserved for the more affluent in society, so too were model pedal cars. In the 1930’s these exclusive toys became more mass produced and accessible to more and more and more happy children.  Even though they were an expensive item to purchase, these years between the two wars were a hey-day for pedal toys.  Pedal car planes, trains, scooters and the ever popular tractor became heirloom toys in many families and those that survived the generations of playtime have pride of place in museums today.   The craftsmanship and engineering that went into producing these first pedal toys was nothing short of magnificent. Built to last and as exact replicas of the original mode of transport, they were a joy for adult and children alike.

Monday, 26 September 2016 15:40:04 Europe/London

There is much talk about Indian summers, but in reality, we don’t get any summers to speak of, let alone Indian ones. In fact, our weather pretty much sucks. Most Irish parents are on high alert for a break in the clouds and the downpours during which they can open the doors and unleash the happiness of children to the outside world. More often than not, we are faced with drizzling Saturdays and wild Sundays where we must entertain the children before they face another week of incarceration in their respective schools. It can be a challenge to survive and have fun in bad weather.

Toys Are Not Just Pink or Blue

Tuesday, 16 August 2016 09:00:00 Europe/London

Top Ten Gender Neutral ToysTop Ten Gender Neutral Toys for Under Sevens - Many parents are tired of the gender divide imposed by toy manufacturers.  Some toy shops have clearly divided pink and blue aisles, with dolls and tea sets on one side and trucks and building blocks on the other. But this is actually a pretty recent development. As recently as the 1970s, toys sold in the US were not marketed with clear gender distinctions and advertisements from the 1970s show children playing with a variety of toys in bright, happy colours of red, green and yellow.
